As you have pointed out in your post above, the need to understand the Bible was magnified because of the Christian belief systems already in place in the area. Even though he was very familiar with the teachings of the church, I saw his understanding of both the Old and New Testaments grow to great heights. I know this is because he was blessed by the spirit because of law...his obedience bound the Lord to His promise that the "windows of Heaven would be opened."
